  • Secretary - Victoria Jackson

Victoria was born on Vancouver Island, B.C. where she has fond memories of family trips to beaches and camping on the coast. She was a water child from birth and was always looking for the next place to swim on a day off. She had a dream of becoming a Marine Biologist from a young age which faltered as she grew into adulthood and finally found its spark again after getting her OW Scuba certificate this year. Deciding to change her career from Accounting to Marine Sciences she is on her way to fulfilling that childhood dream. She will be attending Nautical Training through Camosun in the fall as a start and will be continuing her journey through to UVIC. She is very passionate about our waters and sought out Surfrider to be with like-minded people and to help preserve our beautiful coasts. Victoria enjoys all water sports, especially Scuba diving and snorkeling in her free time.

  • Kelly Zaharko - Treasurer

Kelly is an avid backcountry camper and outdoor enthusiast. Having moved to Vancouver Island almost 20 years ago, she has spent much of her summers exploring the Southern Gulf Islands via kayak, canoe, bike and on foot. Her happy place is on a secluded rocky beach with her husband and a large thermos of coffee. New to Surfrider, Kelly is excited to be a part of the efforts protecting our amazing coastline and marine ecosystems.

  • Volunteer Coordinator - Kailea Rendle

Kailea grew up around the Coast Salish Sea and is incredibly grateful to know its beauty and the peace and healing within it. Nature in all of it’s forms has always been her happy place and where she feels most connected to herself and the world around her. Kailea holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queens Univeristy, and is using it to help further sustainable operational objectives and alternatives towards a healthier relationship between humans and nature. Her goal is for future generations to be able to enjoy nature’s power as much as she has.

  • Marine Pollution Prevention - Noah Snell

Noah was born in the seaside town of White Rock, B.C. Experiencing the landscapes of the B.C. coast and beyond from an early age, it didn’t take long for him to develop a fascination with the natural world. Now located in Victoria, B.C., Noah is passionate about supporting the goals of non-profit organizations. He has always felt at home near the coast and is committed to the Surfrider Foundation's vision of coastal preservation and pollution-free beaches. Noah holds a B.A. in Human Geography from the University of Victoria with a specialization in urban, health and development studies. In his spare time, Noah enjoys photography (noahsnell.com), hiking, and locally-roasted coffee.

She is passionate about inspiring people to step back and look again; to become aware of how we treat ourselves and our natural environment.

  • Beach Cleanup Co-Coordinator - Chris Adamache

Chris was born landlocked in Calgary, Alberta however he has always been passionate about beaches and waterways. In 2013 this passion and his love of nature, surfing and the ocean brought him to Victoria. Now surrounded by water and nature, he feels like he is home. During a recent yearlong camping trip from Victoria to Mexico Chris and his family conducted many beach clean ups and he loved instilling the value of cleaning up the earth and supporting the natural world in his 6yr old daughter. Chris sought out the Surfrider Foundation to find other ways of supporting our beaches and coastlines and to grow as part of a likeminded community. In his role as co-coordinator of Beach Cleanups Chris hopes to inspire others to take action in their own communities to find ways to give back and build a groundswell of local environmental activism. In his spare time, you can find Chris on his paddle board exploring South Vancouver Island’s waterways, surfing at Jordan River or walking the many beaches and forest trails with his family & dog.

  • Beach Cleanup Co-Coordinator - Sophia Olim

Sophia has been involved with the Surfrider Foundation since her mom bribed her with ice cream to join her at Sunday beach cleanups back in 2010. She fell in love with Surfrider while growing up in San Diego California, and quickly joined Vancouver Island's groups when she moved to Victoria for university in 2018. She completed her BSc with Honours in Earth Science and Environmental Studies in 2023 at UVic, specializing in climate change mitigation research. She is passionate about combining data driven research with scientific outreach and policy work. During her time at UVic Sophia was heavily involved with the Surfrider Foundation UVic club in roles ranging from Club Chair to managing the social media sites. She is always down for a chat about how beach cleanups actually do make a long term difference to protecting the environment, loves to travel as much as she can, and can often be found out in the wilderness exploring the beautiful nature of British Columbia.

  • Beach Cleanup Data Lead - Sophie Leitch

Sophie has spent her whole life preparing to move to the coast; after swimming in the ocean for the first time as an infant, marine life has been her passion. Sophie moved to the island to support her goal of working in ocean conservation by completing an undergraduate degree in Biology with a concentration in marine biology and a minor in ocean sciences at Uvic. More comfortable outside than she is indoors, when she’s not studying, she’s hiking, climbing, swimming, diving, or finding some adventure to get involved in. She found Surfrider during an investigation of local conservation efforts where she could combine science, community, and, of course, the ocean.

  • Beach cleanup data specialist - Elise Coates

Ever since Elise moved to the island from the prairies in 2013, she has been in love with the ocean. As a physics student at UVic, she stumbled across UVic’s Surfrider chapter and started working with them as a data analyst. She loves being able to combine her passions for marine conservation, and collecting and organizing data. She is still working her way through an undergraduate degree at UVic, and runs competitively on the university’s track and cross country team. You will most likely bump into her while she’s running along Victoria’s coastline or at a beach clean-up straddling debris collection piles and counting nurdles.

  • Social Media Coordinator - Kate Brooks-Heinimann

Growing up in the south Island, Kate has been fascinated by nature and specifically the ocean since she was a child. She now spends most of her time working as an artist focusing on nature and environmental themes and as art educator. When she's not painting or teaching, Kate can be found surfing or SUPing, dancing and learning about nature.

  • Plastic Pellet Research – DAVID BOUDINOT

David has been involved with Surfrider since 2016 when he found plastic pellets (nurdles) at a Willows Beach Cleanup. He has been tracking plastic pellets ever since and worked with colleagues at the University of Victoria to create a map of where they are washing up on the shores of the Salish Sea. He is currently researching the plastics industry and documenting how pellets are made, transported, and spilled around the world.

David holds Master of Library and Information Studies and likes to research environmental topics and collaborate with others on big projects. Outside of research and Surfrider volunteering, he enjoys camping, picking up trash on beaches, and hiking.
