Executive Committee Spotlight – Erin Willows

What position do you hold on the Surfrider Foundation Vancouver Island (SFVI) Executive Committee?

Co-Vice Chair with the awesome JF Savard.

How long have you volunteered with SFVI?

5 Years.

Why did you become involved?

After learning about the devastating effects of plastic pollution and my own plastic footprint, I couldn’t stand by and watch what was happening to the environment around me without taking action.
What are you most excited about working on with SFVI in 2017?

The Rise Above Plastics (RAP) program dedicated to the elimination of plastic waste in the world’s oceans and watersheds through education, scientific research, and action-based solutions.

What’s your favourite outdoor activity?

Pretty much anything outdoors rain or shine.

What is the #1 thing you are doing to save our oceans?

Eliminating single use plastics in my lifestyle choices and working to educate other on how they can do the same. For example there is always a spork in my purse. 🙂

What is your #1 tip to reduce single-use plastics?

Check second-hand stores, Freecycle, Craigslist, Used Victoria or borrow. I have no problem acquiring second-hand plastic, and I love the durability and esthetics of vintage Tupperware. I think it’s always good to give things as many uses as possible before sending them to the landfill or recycling center. I also look for items made from recycled plastic, for the same reason.

Name a local business or person you support because of their environmental practices.

Lise Richard – who is leading an almost plastic-free life & helping educate others on the effects of plastic to the environment, and what steps they can take to eliminate single-use plastics from their lives. She started up what has been coined, “The Maker Series” a group of friends and colleagues who get together regularly to try their hand at making various products to eliminate plastic packaging – from soap and sunscreen to reusable food wrap and produce bags, Lise is making a positive impact on the people and environment around her. 🙂
