Our mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.
A little over 25 years ago, three people in Malibu California found out that their favourite wave was about to be destroyed. Think about that for a second. Think about something that you love… something that gives you enjoyment… taken away.
First Point, the quintessential perfect, California wave was about to be destroyed. Those three people organized and worked with the local municipalities until they were satisfied that their efforts to preserve that iconic wave would be successful.
This was the genesis of Surfrider Foundation. Today, Surfrider is doing this same thing in about 15 countries around the world.
Surfrider Vancouver Island is a chapter of the larger Surfrider organization. But more importantly, we are collection of like-minded Vancouver Island coastal inhabitants. No matter where we are originally from, we call Vancouver Island home now and are focusing on ways of protecting and preserving it into the future. It’s with this unbridled dedication of our volunteers that our chapter is able to exist and to continue to flourish. We are surfers, paddlers, students, teachers, professionals, young and old. Together, we are working to keep Vancouver Island a special place.
“I owe so much of my life to the ocean.
To the coasts, beaches, estuaries and waves. I can attribute so many of my spontaneous laughs, wild grins and silent terrors to the thousands of hours of I have spend in the ocean or exploring its shores. Whether sailing offshore blue waters, surfing hollow waves, or playing like a 10 yr old in the shore break, the ocean has been omnipresent through my life. The ocean may cover 71% of the planet and host 99 % of the survivable habitat for life yet it is fragile and prone to the destructive forces of man.
The Surfrider Foundation provides an avenue for anyone to play a significant and constructive role in helping protect our oceans, waves and beaches for future generations. Ever since I was a little grommet, I wanted to help and play a role in protecting our coastlines – Surfrider provided me with that opportunity and I am forever grateful.”
